After removal, rinse with lukewarm water and gently clean using the recommended soft brush and suitable product; store in the case when not wearing. Clean teeth before reinsertion too. Hot water and harsh methods may damage surfaces and fit. Follow your orthodontist's product instructions.
Care is more than polishing: food, drinks, dental cleaning and storage belong together. The clear aligner treatment guide covers suitability and planning.
This guide covers aligners used to move teeth during treatment. For appliances worn afterwards to retain the result, see the retainer cleaning guide. Similar appearance does not mean identical care instructions.
Rinse, gently brush appropriately, thoroughly rinse off product and reinsert onto clean teeth. Rinsing removes loose debris but is not the same as mechanical cleaning of surface deposits.
Morning and evening care should work alongside removal, storage and reinsertion at meals. Washing at night does not remove deposits left on teeth all day. A table or tissue also creates a separate loss risk.
The Invisalign UK care guide combines soft brushing, water, rinsing and tooth cleaning for its products. Its recommendations do not automatically apply to other materials.
Remove active aligners before meals and use the case. Drinks other than plain water while wearing can affect staining and hygiene; hot drinks may also affect material. Clean teeth, rinse the appliance and reinsert according to the plan.
Do not wrap a removed aligner in tissue during a tea or coffee break: it may be thrown away with the tissue. If you cannot brush your teeth at that moment, rinse your mouth with water and brush at the first suitable opportunity. Rinsing is a temporary step, not a replacement for brushing. If frequent snacks or difficulty cleaning away from home disrupt your routine, explain your daily habits to your orthodontist so you can review care and wear together.
Do not assume all brands share materials or instructions. A product suitable for teeth is not necessarily suitable for aligners. Material-specific manufacturer instructions matter alongside product name.
There is no universal toothpaste rule. Invisalign UK's May 2022 guide includes a soft brush, a little toothpaste and lukewarm water for its aligners. This does not establish that every abrasive or whitening toothpaste is safe on every product. Follow different instructions given for your appliance and clarify products before switching between brand guides.
For tablets and solutions, a denture or oral-care label is insufficient. Confirm compatibility, preparation and soaking time. More product or longer soaking is not necessarily better. Tablets do not replace tooth brushing or appropriate surface cleaning.
| Method | How to assess it |
|---|---|
| Lukewarm water and suitable soft brush | Basic gentle daily care without scraping. |
| Toothpaste | Follow the relevant manufacturer and clinician; pastes are not equivalent. |
| Tablet or solution | Confirm material compatibility and instructions. |
| Hot water, boiling or heat reshaping | Avoid because shape and fit can be damaged. |
| Household mixtures or harsh scraping | Not substitutes for confirmed material instructions. |
Do not create home sterilisation recipes by mixing bleach, alcohol, vinegar or other substances. An online mixture is not proof of testing on your aligner. Additional tools such as ultrasonic cleaners need consideration alongside device and aligner instructions, not claims that they replace all care.
If unsure, provide the clinic with the brand and exact product name rather than ask about cleaners in general. Advice can then address the particular combination.
Carry a sturdy, clean case in an accessible bag location. Open surfaces, tissues and trouser pockets increase loss and cracking risks. Rinse before storage where possible, and regularly clean and dry the case.
Pack brush, suitable cleaning supplies and case for travel. Return to the normal routine at the first opportunity after imperfect conditions. Ask the clinic rather than independently continue with a markedly dirty, cracked or poorly fitting appliance. The fit, breakage and loss guide explains first steps.
Similar-looking changes may have different causes. Stronger cleaners do not solve every stain, deposit or material fault. Fit and oral symptoms matter alongside appearance.
Staining may relate to tea, coffee or other colourants. Avoid non-water drinks while wearing and clean teeth before reinsertion. Prolonged strong-chemical soaking to eliminate colour is inappropriate.
White or hard deposits may be more than colour. Do not scrape persistent buildup with sharp tools, files or hard brushes. The clinic can assess deposits and usability. A single photograph cannot label every white area as tartar or fungal growth.
Odour should be considered alongside oral hygiene and gums. Persistent symptoms after cleaning warrant oral care assessment rather than deodorising products alone. Odour is not itself a particular disease diagnosis.
| Observation | Initial approach |
|---|---|
| Mild staining with unchanged fit | Review care and drinks; use a suitable product. |
| Persistent hard deposits | Consult the clinic with information and photographs, without scraping. |
| New odour and gum symptoms | Request oral health assessment alongside appliance review. |
| Crack, sharp edge or distortion | Do not heat, cut or glue it. |
| Incomplete seating | Do not force insertion; request personal continuation instructions. |
Tell the clinic which aligner you are using, when the change began, which cleaning product you use and whether you have pain or sores. The aligner problems guide details communication. Do not move to the next aligner yourself to solve a cleaning concern.
