ORTHODONTIC GUIDE

What Should You Do If an Orthodontic Elastic Breaks?

Distinguish patient-worn elastics from bracket ligatures and power chains, and learn why the correct supplied product and personal attachment instructions matter.

Author: Assoc. Prof. Dr. Halise Aydemir, Orthodontic Specialist.

First identify which elastic has broken. If it is an interarch elastic your orthodontist taught you to insert and remove, replace it with the same prescribed type from your supplied spare pack at the demonstrated attachments. Do not replace a bracket's small ligature ring, power chain or damaged attachment at home; contact the clinic. The term braces elastic can describe different parts, so one replacement rule cannot apply to all.

Which elastic has broken?

Colour or a small ring shape alone does not identify the component. A supplied elastic you were taught to insert and remove can resemble a clinic-fitted bracket ring. The AAO elastics information explains that patient-worn elastics have individually selected connections and force.

ComponentHow it may be recognisedFirst step
Patient-inserted removable elasticSupplied in a pack with demonstrated hook positions.Replace from the same pack using your taught pattern.
Bracket ligature ringA small coloured or clear ring holding the archwire in the bracket.Report it; do not refit at home.
Power chain between bracketsConnects several brackets and is fitted in the clinic.Report it; do not cut or pull it.

Separators between teeth serve a different purpose too; do not manage their loss as a broken interarch elastic. Ask the clinic with a photograph if unsure. A fallen ring does not mean that any small rubber band should be inserted in its place.

When can you replace a broken interarch elastic yourself?

If you were instructed to replace it yourself, wash your hands, use the supplied spare pack and fit the new elastic at the same demonstrated attachments. The Plymouth NHS elastics leaflet also recommends replacing broken bands and carrying spares. This article cannot establish which teeth to connect; your personal diagram applies.

The correct product, connections and daily schedule must be known together. Do not guess if the pack is lost or the hooks forgotten. Similar colour or appearance does not mean equal diameter or force. If given two packs, clarify which applies at each stage. Do not use another patient’s product or a household band, or compensate for missed wear with extra elastics.

If prescribed on both sides, do not independently decide to continue on one side only. If a hook, bracket or wire is also affected, choosing a nearby attachment does not restore the intended force arrangement; tell the clinic.

Keep spares in their original packaging away from excessive heat and direct sunlight. Follow replacement instructions rather than washing and reusing a stretched or used elastic. Learn use at meals and daily changes from your own plan; another patient’s schedule is not transferable.

What if a ligature or power chain breaks?

A broken bracket ligature or power chain needs clinical assessment. The Plymouth NHS fixed brace breakage guide distinguishes these from patient-worn elastics. Do not apply that institution's appointment intervals to your own treatment; report the event and ask your clinic about timing.

Do not pull the remaining ring, cut the chain or substitute an interarch elastic. Report whether the wire has left the bracket, the bracket moves and pain is present. Report breakage even without pain.

Previously demonstrated orthodontic wax may temporarily relieve cheek irritation. If brackets or wire are affected, see the bracket and wire problems guide. Wax is not permanent repair, and do not work on the wire at home.

What if spares run out or elastics repeatedly break?

Contact the clinic without waiting for the next review if spares have run out. Where possible, ask before the last pack is empty. For repeated breakage, explain circumstances as well as frequency: during insertion, speaking or eating, and whether it is always on the same side. Mention a pack change or a moving hook or bracket too.

These observations are not home tests of the cause. Do not overstretch elastics or force hooks to reproduce failure. A thicker-looking product is not necessarily the prescribed one; a stronger band does not resolve a wrong connection or damaged component. Let the clinic check the pack, attachments and appliance where necessary rather than choosing random products elsewhere.

A hypothetical message might say: “My supplied elastic broke twice on the right. Pack and attachment photographs are attached, and I have no spares. How should I proceed today?” This is a communication example, not a new prescription. The clinic assesses material or review needs.

Report known latex sensitivity or a suspected new reaction; do not independently switch materials. A continuation plan needs a clear contact route for interruptions, as well as the correct product and connections.

When does elastic breakage need emergency assessment?

A broken elastic alone usually is not a medical emergency. However, breathing or swallowing difficulty, rapidly increasing swelling, uncontrolled bleeding or serious trauma warrants emergency care rather than waiting for a routine orthodontic appointment. The AAO emergency guide explains this distinction.

See the fixed braces guide for general mechanics. Your elastic choice, connections and wear schedule remain subject to your individual instructions.
